The Reaper Cruiser was designed by Ares as a heavy multi-purpose platform for the SAN, however they declined to purchase it. So Ares has attempted to sell the design to Colony Defense Fleets within SA space. The SA refused to let them sell it to either mercenaries or rival governments, with severe punishments if they did. However they are fairly expensive for a colony to buy, which is why very few were made let alone sold. Ironically the SAN only turned the vessel down because they were simply not looking to expand their cruiser fleet.
It’s armed with five large triple barreled heavy laser turrets along it’s centerline. Two more triple barrel laser turrets are mounted in the centerline with ten more on each side giving it a strong broadside. It’s entirely energy based weapons loadout gives it enhanced endurance as it does not need to rely on any ammo. Sadly this also gives it a very short effective engagement range requiring the ship to get in close to be useful. This is not an issue against Frigates or other smaller craft, but could certainly be one against most missile Destroyers or a Battle Cruiser.
The engines are nothing to write home about, but solid and durable fusion torch designs. It uses an innovative technique for mounting the LGS, however the LGS itself was downsized after the military turned it down and it is said that the design was intended to be a 3:10 or even a 4:10 originally. The Reapers FTL drive was meant to be a SAN Military Linear Type 2, however with the SAN turning the design down Ares installed one of their own type 2 FTL drives instead. Even that is overkill as a skeleton crew ships it off to the system it’s unlikely to ever leave once the ship is sold.
The Prototype was given to the SAN who did run it through space trials before mothballing it, however as it has only been a couple years the ship is actually still in very good condition. It has been rumored that some of the production models were actually sold to unauthorized third parties, however no proof of this exists.
