The Odyssey Light Cruiser was meant to herald a new age of effectively peaceful space exploration. Physically smaller than cruisers like the America Class Cruiser, they are outfitted with labs and facilities to enable longer survey and explorations missions that are typically limited on a cruisers that need to perform a wide variety of tasks. The Odyssey Class Light Cruisers can still perform a variety of roles such as: leading small battle groups of corvettes against pirates, running patrols, or transporting dignitaries. However all of those are secondary in it’s design.
The Odyssey is armed with a pair of dual barreled heavy laser turrets, one on top and one on bottom, and a pair of standard missile launchers in retractable housings which can each fire up to eight missiles at once. Even with this limited selection of weapons many at the time of it’s construction argued it carried to many for ‘peaceful exploration’, however pirate threats have meant some weapons are of critical importance in any military vessel. An array of fusion torch drives provides it’s movement capability paired with hundreds of maneuvering thrusters giving it average agility for a ship it’s size.
Unlike earlier ships when not under acceleration or in combat it has a Limited Gravity System (or LGS). Using the LGS allows .2G gravity within all rooms, though some of the corridors remain 0G environments to facilitate movement. It uses as much energy from the reactor as the entire weapons array however, so it’s use is limited to noncombat situations. The LGS is also the reason for the Odyssey and later craft could break the 10G limit on human acceleration endurance and it’s also why all the decks are horizontal compared to the direction of orientation for the ship while earlier models had to orient the decks, whenever possible, to align with the direction of thrust.
It usually has a pair of shuttles, corvettes, or the Cyrano Lander attached to it’s docking ports. The Cyrano’s in particular were designed at the same time for use as planetary scout craft and so were the primary vessel of choice to pair with a Odyssey. If used for none exploration or research tasks another type of shuttle or corvette is more likely to be used.
