The Defiant Battleship is the big brother of the Inazuma Destroyer in design concept focused around a massive axial railgun. The Defiant was built for accurate fire as opposed to the older Zero Battleship which used saturation fire. It was argued for quite a long time that the Defiant was not needed, which may have been the reason for it’s name.
The project that designed and built the Defiant was originally started under the UEG at the tail end of the Colony Rebellion and was handed over to the SAN after the SA was formed. The SAN did not see a massive need for a new battleship, but the SA government wanted something to show for the work that had been done already on the project (design had effectively been complete). Ship technology would undergo massive changes with the advent of LGS during it’s construction and it was nearly scraped again as it looked worse and worse compared to LGS capable craft and the initial outlook was that LGS would require a complete redesign. In the end one engineer created a LGS system specific to the Defiant without requiring a redesign and a long rebuild. However it only uses the ICS component of LGS. Even so the Defiant still has the record for longest construction time at three and a half decades.
The primary weapon of the Defiant is a massive axial railgun between two booms, which is backed up by four fixed forward heavy laser systems, 8 missile launchers, and 20 light laser systems. It also has four hangar bays which can carry shuttles. A large update was done to the hangar bays to trade some shuttle capacity for fighters, though even with that it doesn’t carry very many.
Like the Zero, the Defiant uses an internal spin gravity ring to provide limited gravity. It uses four main VASIMR drives for thrust and has a FTL drive for interstellar travel.
